THERE are lies, damn lies and football statistics. You’d pick Joe Lewis today based on his goals per game conceded record this season. You’d also pick him based on the fact that the only two clean sheets Posh have achieved in the Championship arrived soon after he’d replaced Paul Jones in goal, a move that co incided with the longest unbeaten run of the season so far (five games).

However, the team have picked up a better points per game average overall under Jones so the dilemma facing Posh boss Darren Ferguson is obvious.wholesale jerseys from china

I’ve always felt that Lewis is at his best when he’s busy. Some of his displays in the Championship two seasons ago were exceptional, maybe as he was always on his toes playing for a struggling team.

Last season he made high profile blunders in games when Posh were dominant (eg MK Dons) which cost the team points.

Gary Neville said on Sky TV recently that the best goalkeepers are the ones that can make excellent saves despite generally having nothing to do. Joe Hart did just that last weekend at Villa.

It wouldn’t have been an issue in the good old days before the handling of back passes was outlawed, but it’s a vital part of a keeper’s armoury these days.

It is the one area that Jones looked to have a glaring weakness. A couple of early season goals (eg Brighton) arrived directly from his poor kicks.

Lewis is decent off either foot, regularly getting good distance on his clearances,

I get the impression that Lewis is a quiet man as defenders occasionally appear unsure as to whether or not he is leaving his line or coming out to collect a through ball.

But there is no denying that the team’s best defensive displays came when he was selected. Zakuani and Bennett looked more comfortable with Lewis behind them.

That was then though. Posh have performed poorly at the back in two of their last three games so maybe it’s time for a change again?

The result was Paul Jones 39, Joe Lewis 4.

Pick of the comments:

“Jones, obviously. Joe is infuriating. He can be brilliant and dire. A mercurial winger is fine, less so a mercurial goalkeeper.””Jones. Because Lewis isn’t good enough. The atmosphere will be awful if Joe’s name is read out at 2.55pm today.””Lewis is a good shot stopper, but flaps at crosses too much, unsettling his defence. Jones is no Steele or Tyler but gets my vote.””Lewis, best shot stopper, excellent distribution, saves more points than gives away, too easy to blame keeper for all ills.”
